"Liberating" may have been the wrong word to use, since it's a rather worn out one, if not an outright broken word. A person who disregards gender norms is free from them in the same, rather trivial sense that a person who does not own a telephone or cell phone is free from being distracted by them. The role in society, and the consequences of a deviation, still remain.
