And created! Humans have a tendency to get really creative during wars. Unfortunately it's usually creativity of the "how can we kill people more efficiently" sort, but we do get the odd civilian offshoot. Bletchley Park's role in the creation of the digital computer is the most obvious example.
I wanted to look up "bare life" in a search engine to see what it meant, but I thought it might come back with a load of porn so I tried to figure it out instead. Plus I outta be less reliant on search engines as a brain extension*. From context it seems to be something like a living creature treated as if it had no emotional state or goals of its own? In the zebra case, just a tool to use towards some end.
* I might make a Firefox add-on to deliberately interfere with my own searching in order to enforce this principle....
