I feel like I go on and on about this, because I'm sure I've waffled about it before! But "werewolf" (and interestingly enough, "lycanthrope") is basically an inherently gendered term that has, in modern literature and consciousness, lost its gender. i.e., "wolf-man" has distinct gender whereas "werewolf" does not.
