Re: making gendered words neutral

Is there a word for "student of higher rank"? In karate there is "sensei". I'm trying to remember if MIT Isshinryu had a word for being respectful to a student of higher rank like that; we frequently said things like "yes, sensei" but the club didn't really use the word sempei.
