I really, really, really like your metaphor, and I think it's entirely reasonable that different people would find what Barthes has to do with that obedience either useful or not. Thank you.
(I'm still not sure if D&G will do anything worthwhile with my submission, but my advisor got enough out of the process that I'm willing to give it a try. Even if I am mostly wasting time I will probably learn something.)
