Speaking of work, my coworkers say I am "not entirely a shill" for posting this entry to our MetaCarta corporate blog: The MetaCarta Blog

I'm supposed to distribute it to "friends, family, and colleagues." I guess that would be you people.

As a sometime user of ArcGIS, I was wondering if you could recommend a similar freeware program. I don't mean GoogleEarth or anything of that ilk (though photo geotagging is something I was drooling over in 2002 and love to little pieces now), I mean a program that can take the demographic, topological, political, and social datasets that exist and manipulate them on a map. I mean, GoogleEarth and GoogleTransit and stuff rock, but when I need to view the the concentration of poverty in Boston vs. the number of foreclosures in the last year, I can't use them. Thoughts?

You sent me a message, but I can't reply - privacy options. My reply is as follows:

Sadly my answer is "I can't find anything" even after asking around some. I will keep an ear open though.

Have you tried (I asked someone about these, I've never used them) qGIS and GRASS?
