After looking at the other comments, my main response is: no, you're not overthinking this. :) Popular works are exactly the ones that need knowing analysis, even if intellectual engagement narrows the audience of your comments.
About the issue itself, I don't think I have anything to say that hasn't by this point been said often (and better) elsewhere, as is often the case when I come across debates about gender or race.
