I was quoted in today's Boston Globe article about healthy living in Somerville, talking about cycling and bike lanes. You can read it here.
On the way to work today I was hit by a large black sedan with tinted windows, which then ran away before I could get its license plate number. I'm OK.
I think the bike is OK, too. I was on Cherry St in Somerville, turning left onto Summer St at a stop sign with a car behind and to the left of me. I had my arm out to signal a left turn. The one car coming signaled that it was turning out of the way, so I started into the intersection. I heard an engine I didn't expect to hear and thought "Oh, I guess the car behind me is turning left. I must have missed the blinker." I veered wide right to leave room, started to turn, and then there was a car where I was supposed to be. By the time I had collected myself, it was gone. It struck on the front wheel; it looks true if I spin it but I felt a little wobbly biking to the doctor (coincidental appointment) and then to work. On the other hand, I might have felt wobbly because I just got hit by a car.
At least I'm OK. I had to turn my counter at work over to 0, but that ended a streak of 349 days without being hit by a car. SO. CLOSE. Grrr.

Date: 2008-12-02 04:07 pm (UTC)every time I get hit, and then forget about it. :)
And I count it as at least OK luck --- that a car that obviously had it
that much in for me only managed superficial damage suggests a good EV
roll, if nothing else!

Date: 2008-12-02 05:37 pm (UTC)Please file a police report, however useless you feel it is. Your report will only become a statistic, but without those statistics there's no hope of getting the police to pay attention. (Not, mind you, that I really believe there's much chance of getting cops around here to pay attention to anything besides donuts and light-brite boards.)

No! Very bad! The city traffic needs to STOP DOING THIS NOW. You are hugged a lot and ordered to be safe and okay. Gah!
Glad you are, as I said, okay. But for gods' sake. Feh! Poor you. Also, feh!

I biked to work today and it was fine, so maybe I have had my near-death
experiences for the next year or three. Hopefully.
