Remember, Remember, The Second'f December, [0]
Catgirls, Glowsticks, and Goth.
No justification why catgirl goth ravin'
Should ever be forsought.
As we get older, and specifically as I get older and more "boring,"
it gets a lot harder for me to find old-school CGR venues. The era of
the cheap shitty warehouse full of recent MIT grads may have ended, or
it may just be that no one tells me about them anymore, but it's hard
to hold a dance party somewhere I don't know about, and the last party
_I_ went to was the birthday party for a one-year-old. That party was
genuinely awesome, but not in a dance-party kind of way, and I spent
most of it talking to folks a generation up from me about child-rearing
and home improvement because once I stopped being terrified of getting
old I realized that I'm actually pretty excited for it. But this all adds
up to "This year, we're going back to the ancestral tradition of having
the party at my house."
This is actually kind of cool because right now I live alone and that
means there is _tons_ of space. We can have music on the first floor and
people chilling in multiple places on the second floor and even folks
hiding out with the cats on the third floor if you're cool being in my
sweet and bizarre attic bedroom. It's also kind of cool because while
it is lonely, living alone has taught me so much about who I am when no
one else is around that like. I have seen glimpses of in travel and in
long walks in the desert but never really had to live with and make a
home with. I am large; I contain multitudes; the multitudes are actually
pretty nice and you're welcome to get to know us, if you'd like. [1]
Because we have all of this space, and because I think I might be the
only person DJing this year, I'm gonna try something different that I
think will still be fun. This year's Catgirl Goth Rave is actually:
CATGIRL GOTH SLUMBER RAVE WITH BONUS CHILLOUT BRUNCH
I'm envisioning something like this:
8 PM: DOORS OPEN. I mean, you could get here before this, but we'd be
frantically cleaning and trying to get the audio setup right and probably
Rik will be baking cookies.
9 PM: MUSIC. I've got a bunch of stuff in the queue, and I think you'll
like dancing to it. A couple of other folks might spin too, we'll see.
(If you'd like to be one of them, hit me up!) Glowsticks will be provided.
12 AM: TRAIN SHUTTLES. I live a bit further out than folks are used
to going, so if you need to get to the train and might have to make a
connection after that, this is probably the time to head out. Someone,
maybe me, will run shuttles to Braintree for anyone who needs it. (There's
also a bus you can walk to, but ugh, it'll be cold.)
12:30 AM: SLUMBER PARTY. Let's watch goofy cat videos and talk about
back in the day and drink hot cocoa (you can spike your hot cocoa if
you want to, I guess). There are couches and futons and air mattresses
and bring a sleeping bag for yourself if it's easy because I only own
so many blankets?
10:30 AM: I'LL PROBABLY WAKE UP AND START MAKING PANCAKES.
NOONISH: CHILLOUT BRUNCH. If you're still here, or if you had to go
home because you are not a night owl, or if you couldn't come late at
night because you have a small child, drop by for pancakes and seitan
and whatever else we manage to make. Maybe we'll send someone out for
bubble tea. Maybe we'll experiment with making _home bubble tea_. Actually
that's frickin' brilliant let's do that. We can go out and get some if
all of our attempts are terrible. :)
4 PM: I LOVE YOU ALL BUT MAYBE IT'S TIME TO GO HOME UNLESS YOU WANT TO
HELP ME CLEAN UP AND GET THE GIANT TABLE BACK TOGETHER. And if you've
been coming to these for a long time, you know that _God, fuck that
giant table._ [2]
... but honestly once the music starts and we all embrace our gothiest,
cattiest selves, who knows what will happen. (Other than the train
schedules. Those are pretty well understood.)
Looking forward to seeing hopefully many of you in December. <3
-r.
[-1] If you got linked here and we're not DW friends, but we are friends, just ask
and I'll be happy to give you the address information. <3
[0] November 5th, Observed. Actually I have woken up on November 5th in
Australia and have like 40+ hours of November 5th as I make my way across
time zones. I may get myself Birthday Boba in two different countries,
that would be pretty fucking cool.
[1] Spoilers for my end of year email I guess but shrugs whatever.
[2] "You can take any furniture from the old office you want," they
told me, not thinking I'd even consider trying to get an eight foot
conference table back up to my second-floor Somerville apartment. It is
an incredible pain in the ass to do anything with. I love it and will keep it forever.
