You can fit a lot of things into a 5' by 8' trailer. Where by "a lot of things" I mean "all of the things I own that are not my car." Woo. Technically, I am not putting all of the things in there, but I am pretty sure they would fit. That is both pleasing and displeasing to me; it means that I own a non-stupid quantity of things, but it also means that I fail to own a bunch of things I would like to own. I wonder how many copies of my book would fit in a 5' by 8' trailer.
Well, a hardcover book can be approximated as 6" by 9". This is not actually quite true, as the books I was looking at using were 5.5" by 8.25" I think, but we will go with it. This means you have a .5' x .75' object that you want to tile in a 5' by 5' by 8' space. Thus, you have a hundred books in 5' by 7.5'. We'll call the rest slop, and say that it is used for packing material. Now we play "How thick is a book?" If i used hardcover books of around 150 pages, the answer would be somewhere around a half an inch thick, so there would be 2400 books per foot of height. That seems like too many. Do I mean 240? No, I think I have a flaw in my reasoning. Start over:
There would not be 100 books on the surface of the cart, would there? I don't think so. Let's pretend that a book is a foot square and the cart is 5' by 8'. That means that you could fit five books across and eight lengthwise, leading to 5x8=40 books. So what I actually want is to line up the .5' sides with the 5' dimension (10) and the .75' sides with the 8' dimension (again, 10) and oh wow that is actually a hundred books. I guess visualizing that, it makes sense.
OK! So 2400 books a foot times 5 feet means 12000 copies of _Leaving School_ in the trailer currently attached to the back of my car. I bet this is not practical due to weight concerns though; the hitch I have can only handle 3500 pounds on the ball mount widget, and paper is heavy. However, this does mean that concerns I had about not having enough room for 2000 books in storage in my house was wrong, and it _definitely_ means that since I can rent a 5' by 10' by 8(or so) storage area for like $100 a month, I can warehouse my books however I feel like it and not think very hard. Victory is mine... for a problem I wasn't even trying to solve. "Woo."
Anyway. The point of posting here (aside from babbling at myself in any available text buffer) was to let any of you who might not be on first-coming or -c jesus (and those of you I _don't even know who you are_, *cough*a_wry*cough*) know that I am moving back to Boston tomorrow. Landing is expected circa Monday; I'll deal with everything else then. You can call me on my new phone while I am driving if you want; get the number via a real channel (like, say, my website).

Date: 2005-02-15 07:04 am (UTC)Not that I ever came up to visit or anything. But now I won't have the opportunity to fail to do so in the future. Oh well, just one more reason to get my ass back east after I finish up here.
