I think that's true of lots of environmentally disastrous choices, though, not just driving. Driving does bother me more because, like eating animal products, it's more avoidable than people think it is. Though it depends on locality; not driving in Boston is easier than not driving in Bloomington is easier than not driving in, I don't know, Green Bay, Wisconsin. In Boston I basically never felt like "Oh I'd rather just drive"; here it's been much more a conscious effort to say "No, I am not going to drive there" and walk or bike, although I've been making that conscious effort and am happy about it.

Big parts of the US are optimized aggressively for cars, which is sort of the corporations/government's way of pushing additional costs onto people who choose not to (or are not able to) drive. It makes it really hard to not have one, even if you don't use it regularly, and then once you have one and have to pay for insurance and upkeep and such, it's a bad investment if you don't use it except when you need to take those long trips or haul stuff*, and then if you're not careful you wake up one morning and realize you've been driving to work...

*(While I admire your ability to move Ikea furniture via bicycle, I am just not that hardcore. :)
