A Brief Note On Politics
Oct. 2nd, 2008 03:23 pmI have basically stayed out of the fray on the US election, as it's
probably obvious from my vegan-biker-dykeness who I am voting for (Obama)
and why (his stated platform agrees with what I want in more places than
McCain's does, even though neither of them is really thrilling). Recent
events, however, have twisted my brain into a pretzel, and I have found
a convenient conspiracy theory to believe so that my mind can get back
into a normal shape. The theory is this: Sarah Palin is actually an
elaborate legal fiction devised by Tina Fey, who is using the 2008
Presidential Election as her project for being jumped into OULIPO.
Neither "John McCain" nor "Sarah Palin" contains the letter e --- screw
Troopergate, I say we immediately demand the extradition of George Perec.
Barack Obama (no e!) was forced to choose JoE BidEn over Hillary Clinton
to show that he stands with the majority of Americans on issues of
tremendous importance, like preventing the take-over-the-world schemes
of absurdist French poets. There we go! Now I can sleep at night.
Obama: Tough on absurdist FrEnch poEts! ChangE AmErica nEEds.
....{\tiny well \emph{I} think it's funny}

Date: 2008-10-02 04:55 pm (UTC)Why are you voting for Obama? Being in the deepest of blue states means never having to cast your ballot for no stinkin' lesser evil. I've voted Green the last four elections, and intend to continue doing so until MA becomes a swing state, or the Greens themselves get elected, or the American republic collapses, whichever comes first.

Date: 2008-10-02 05:26 pm (UTC)I hate to say it, but there's nobody in this race I'd vote for gladly. There are probably folks I'd trust in the office, but they're all, yanno, teaching and writing and stuff. :p
Not to denigrate third parties in general. There have been people in the past I could get enthusiastic about. And I don't dislike Obama myself, though I know he's not gonna advance us significantly towards the world we both want.
Guess I'm voting straight Meadow Party again. Ack-thbbptt.

Date: 2008-10-02 07:13 pm (UTC)Heh. ^_^ Can I say that "Global Country of World Peace" sounds like something poorly translated from an Asian language? I imagine the GCWP sending some earnest guy in a suit to try and talk Mothra out of eating Tokyo...

Date: 2008-10-02 05:51 pm (UTC)dash of "it's people like me voting Democrat that let you vote for
weird things safely." :) C4 also has a point in that the other ballot
denizens aren't exactly more palatable, they just make me want to wash
out a different portion of my mouth.

Date: 2008-10-02 06:51 pm (UTC)I think the greens would be a disaster in office, but they'd be a different kind of disaster than the status quo -- which is such a disaster that we will be cleaning up after its failures for the rest of our lives.

Date: 2008-10-02 06:18 pm (UTC)been taking notes on for the last week. (You know, another Copious Free
Time project. And just to warn you, I'm told the Wikipedia page on the
book is utter crap and wrong; I haven't gone and looked yet, myself.)
There's totally a novella in "What if the man who received the story of
the end of the world, including spoilers for how to get into Heaven based
on where to stand after the Resurrection, were _____?" I had been playing
with various values of _____; if I wanted to rock the Oulipo thing,
I would fill it in with Italo Calvino. "To get jumped out of Oulipo,
I had to write a new section of _Invisible Cities_ about New Jerusalem
by traveling back in time from the Rapture, which I snuck into based
on advice from a blood-winged spirit of time. That talked to me in a
mirror. In a cave." ...eh, I think I'll stick with one of the other ones,
you can have OULIPO. :)
