This is very announcement-y because I am supposed to be doing, you know,
my _job._ I am going to be on West Coast USA this August, doing West
Coast type things. A week in Seattle (Aug 4-11), then SF, then maybe
Santa Cruz, then LA-area. It will be great.

If you want letters/postcards/what have you, email me your physical
address, even if you already think I have it, especially if you are
sure I must have it but actually I just dropped that one letter in
your mailbox that one time. I have this awesome fox stationery, and
I want to get into the habit of letter-writing again, including with
all you west-coast people I owe things to.

If you know people in those areas who are awesome and I should meet,
feel free to give them my contact information or point them here or
have them email me or whatever it is that people do to get in touch
these days. I expect to be ramped into pretty high extrovert mode
most of the time I am not working on my novel.

If you live in or near those areas I will probably be sending you email
personally but if you want to jumpstart the process and grab me by the
throat and say "You! Hanging out! Here! This time!" that's a supported
operation. Also the second half of the trip, when I'll be traveling
alone, I will be couchsurfing haphazardly. If you want me to ride your
cushioned waves... that sounds really, really bad. But yeah.

Any recommendations for small headphones? Living out of a bike bag and
carrying around my giant Sennheisers seems dumb. Since I already have
my giant Sennheisers, I'd prefer not to spend a lot of money. Something
I can Amazon before I leave is ideal, but I could also hit a store if
that's the right thing to do.

Anyone want to let me borrow a bike, or know somewhere that I can rent
one? I'm especially interested in one in SF from Aug16-20 or so but
really anytime I have a bike I will be Even More Happy Than Otherwise
Rachel. Ideally I'd want a 56cm fixie with 70ish gear-inches but I can
ride pretty much anything :) Which reminds me, I need to take pictures
of the new bike...

Seriously though. I will ride your cushioned waves _all night long._

Back to work with me...

I'm going to miss the whole month, but conveniently, I can play Crawl from
anywhere, and it will be a good way to take breaks from working on the novel.

What're you looking for in terms of small headphones?

In big headphones, which is what I use when it's convenient, I like totally-over-the-ears things that make me not hear people around me. I don't have much experience with small headphones; noise cancelling would be nice but isn't required.

Grr argh! I am going to be in the southeast from the 7th - 27th, which sounds like it means I'll be missing you entirely.

I'd love a letter anyway, and if you write me a letter I will very likely even write you back and/or send you strange shiny exciting things in the mail.

Also, I do have a fantastically comfortable couch (and, since I'll be gone, a whole actual bed), and you're welcome to crash here even if I'm out of town. Chris'll be around, and if you let me know ahead of time I can make sure there's a key available.

You are one of the people I shamefully owe letters to. Perhaps I will start making amends my dropping one off at your house :P I may end up staying with people on the basis that they are people and I can talk to them, but the offer is much appreciated and I might take you up on it... it's still kind of haphazard at the moment.

The bike, though, that would totally work. I would be very careful and bring a good lock! If you don't mind, I would love to put some miles on it :)

No worries about the house, just let me know when you can. If I'm gone and you need crashspace, you can coordinate with Chris to pick up the spare key. (You know Mr. Porter, yeah?)

I have not yet gotten a good lock or a helmet, so I haven't been riding the bike. This is tragedy. I'd be very happy to have someone riding & enjoying it while I'm gone.

It occurs to me that since I'll be gone, you could also borrow my shiny red bike (http://iridium.livejournal.com/188272.html#cutid1); I think I'd trust you to take good care of it. I do not know measurements or gear-inches or all that fancy hipster business. It's a dumpster-rescue vintage 3-speed.

23rd is probably a bit late --- I want to make sure to spend time with all of my friends in LA. Where will you be coming _from_? I was thinking more like 20th for Santa Cruz...

I'm a big fan of ear-clip headphones; my current favorites are these. No band, retractable cord (so they don't get all tangled up in a pocket or bag), and they sound pretty good.

I found them at Target, but they're sold through (looks like not by, just through) Amazon as well.

This may be the easiest solution, which suggests I should roll with it :) Want to plan a handoff? I'll be at the Diesel tonight from 8 or 8:30 until late, if that works, or I can schedule with you elsewise...

Hm. I'm not going to be there tonight. I'll be home or around the area most of the day tomorrow, except 10-2pm and 7-10pm. Friday I'm also currently unplanned other than being busy 6-7pm.

I have a pair of over-the-ear headphones that fold down to something small enough to fit into my hand. Complete with carrying case, making them survive a lot longer in a bag.
They're MIA right now, but let me see what I can dredge up online...
... pretty sure they're these (http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&productId=11038875&langId=-1)

Yes...

I'd prefer not to spend a lot of money.

...but no.

(My inclination would be to bring the giant Sennheisers anyway; mine at least do sort of fold up, and they're not all *that* giant relative to the size of my backpack.)

I'd consider spending a lot of money if they were _that good_... but another reason I don't want to bring the Sennheisers is that I don't want to get them ganked. I'm curious what you recommend anyway.

Look me up! I'm still using the same cell number I've had for the last seven (?) years (also in finger info, also ask laura47), bad at personal email right now. I have classes on Tuesday and Wednesday night, but I'm available on the other evenings. Do you need airport shuttling?

By the way, there's this crazy-sounding arthouse film playing at Northwest Film Forum this week, The Silence Before Bach (http://www.nwfilmforum.org/cinemas/calendar.php#silencebeforebach). I'm thinking of going tomorrow night, can let you know how it was if you're interested.
